How to Crochet the Solid Shell Stitch

The Solid Shell Stitch creates a shell pattern with very few holes. The Solid Shell Stitch would be great for bags, cowls, and baby blankets!


Step 1: Foundation Chain

  1. Create a foundation chain in multiples of 6 + 1 (add 1 for base chain)


Step 2:

Begin you’re row with 1/2 a shell:

  1. 2 double crochets in 4th chain from hook (makes a 3 post 1/2 shell)
  2. Skip 2 chains
  3. 1 single crochet in next chain


Step 3:

Continue down the row creating shells:

  1. Skip 2 chains
  2. 5 double crochet in next chain
  3. Skip 2 chains
  4. 1 single crochet in the next chain
  5. Repeat step 1 to 4 until you have 3 chains left.
  6. Skip 2 chains
  7. 2 double crochet in the last stitch (ending with a 1/2 shell)


Step 4:

In the second row, start with a single crochet, then create a full shell

  1. Ch 1
  2. Turn
  3. 1 single crochet into the first stitch
  4. Skip 2 stitches
  5. 5 double crochet in next stitch
  6. Skip 2 chains
  7. 1 single crochet in the next stitch
  8. Repeat steps ending with 1 Single crochet in the last stitch
