For the Cake
  1. Duncan Hines Classic Devil's Food Cake Mix
  2. 1 cup of butter milk
  3. 1/2 cup of vegetable oil
  4. 4 eggs
  5. Colored Ice Cream Cone, green ones specifically. They usually come in a pack with 3 different colors so you'll need 8 boxes to make 24 cupcakes.
For the chocolate frosting
  1. 6 ounces semisweet chocolate, coarsely chopped
  2. 2 sticks (1/2 pound) unsalted butter, at room temperature
  3. 1 large egg yolk
  4. 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  5. 1 cup plus 1 tablespoon confectioners’ sugar, sifted
For the decoration
  1. Black Gel Icing for piping
  2. Smarties Candy Rolls
  3. SweeTARTS
  4. (don’t get the small ones that come in the wrappers like Smarties because you want them slightly larger than the Smarties… the ones in the movie theater type candy box are the perfect size)
To make the cupcakes
  1. Put the green cones standing up in a muffin pan
  2. Preheat the oven to 350
  3. Line the muffin cups with paper liners
  4. Put the cake mix in your mixing bowl
  5. Add in the buttermilk, vegetable, oil, and eggs
  6. Beat until moistened – about 30 seconds
  7. Increase the speed to high and beat until thick – about another 2 mins
  8. Fill the cones about 2/3 full with cupcake batter
  9. Bake for 15-20 mins – until a toothpick poked into the cupcake centers comes out clean.
  10. Remove the cupcakes from the baking plans and allow to cool completely before frosting.
Make the frosting
  1. In a microwave-safe bowl, heat the chocolate at high power in 30-second intervals, stirring, until most of the chocolate is melted.
  2. Stir until completely melted, then set aside to cool to room temperature.
  3. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a paddle, beat the butter at medium speed until pale and fluffy.
  4. Add the egg yolk and vanilla and beat for 1 minute, scraping down the side of the bowl.
  5. At low speed, slowly beat in the confectioners’ sugar, about 1 minute.
  6. Frost the cupcakes.
Prepare Frankenstein’s bolts
  1. Take a Smartie and pipe some chocolate frosting onto one side
  2. Place a Sweetart on top and set aside.
  3. Continue until you have enough bolts for all your cones (you need 2 bolts for each cupcake).
  4. Then use the black icing to make their faces and add some stitches on their heads.
  5. Apply more black icing to the back of each bolt and apply them to your cones.
Tips & tricks
  1. These are pretty hard to transport… so I recommend if you’re bringing them to a party that you leave the bolts off until you get there. Or you can assemble them completely at home and bring your black icing along to attach any bolts that may have fallen off during the car ride
