How to Crochet the Double Crochet Stitch

The double crochet stitch is one of the most common crochet stitches. It is a taller stitch than single crochet.


Step 1

First make a slip knot and foundation chain 14 stitches.

Bring the yarn over the crochet hook from back to front and draw it through the chain stitch and up onto the working area of the hook; you now have three loops on the hook.

Bring the yarn over the crochet hook from back to front and draw it through the chain stitch and up onto the working area of the hook; you now have three loops on the hook.

After working in each chain across, count your double crochet stitches. There should be 12 of them, counting the first three chain stitches you skipped at the beginning of the row as a double crochet.

Turn your work so that the back side is facing you.

Chain 3 (ch 3; for the turning chain).

Yarn over the hook (yo).

Skipping the first stitch of the row directly below the turning chain, insert your hook in the next stitch

Repeat Steps 3 and 4 from the previous section in each of the next 12 double crochet (dc) stitches. Be sure to yarn over before inserting your hook in each stitch.

Work 1 double crochet in the top chain of the previous row’s turning chain
